Reducing 9-Intersection to 4-Intersection for Identifying Relations in Region Connection Calculus
نویسندگان
چکیده
Several region connection calculi have been proposed for use in Qualitative Spatial Reasoning (QSR). Perhaps the most well-known model is RCC-8, which uses a 9-Intersection framework to identify the spatial relation between two regions. The calculation of the 9-Intersection matrix is particularly computationintensive in 3D. Herein we show that 9-Intersection calculations can be replaced with 2-Intersection, 3Intersection, and (at most) 4-Intersection calculations for each RCC-8 relation, yielding the same results. This reduces the computational effort considerably while retaining the same accuracy. Mathematical proofs are given to show the equivalence of the 9Intersection and the ≤4-Intersection.

Identification of Relations in Region Connection Calculus: 9-Intersection Reduced to 3 + -Intersection Predicates
The intersection between objects relates to a class of problems where either precise intersection is required or imprecise intersection is acceptable. The calculation of intersection between two 2D/3D objects is a computation-intensive process. For qualitative spatio-temporal reasoning, it is sufficient to know the existence of intersection instead of the precise intersection. In order to ident...
متن کاملSpatial data methods and vague regions: A rough set approach
Uncertainty management has been considered essential for real world applications, and spatial data and geographic information systems in particular require some means for managing uncertainty and vagueness. Rough sets have been shown to be an effective tool for data mining and uncertainty management in databases. The 9-intersection, region connection calculus (RCC), and egg-yolk methods have pr...
متن کاملمدلسازی روابط توپولوژیک سه بعدی فازی در محیط GIS
Nowadays, geospatial information systems (GIS) are widely used to solve different spatial problems based on various types of fundamental data: spatial, temporal, attribute and topological relations. Topological relations are the most important part of GIS which distinguish it from the other kinds of information technologies. One of the important mechanisms for representing topological relations...
متن کاملTriangle-Triangle Intersection Determination and Classification to Support Qualitative Spatial Reasoning
In CAD/CAM modeling, objects are represented using the Boundary Representation (ANSI Brep) model. Detection of possible intersection between objects can be based on the objects’ boundaries (i.e., triangulated surfaces), and computed using triangle-triangle intersection. Usually only a cross intersection algorithm is needed; however, it is beneficial to have a single robust and fast intersection...
متن کاملA Fast Intersection Detection Algorithm for Qualitative Spatial Reasoning
In this paper we present a framework for determining the intersection of geometric objects based on the 9-Intersection model used in qualitative spatial reasoning. Triangle-triangle intersection is the computational basis for interaction between 2D/3D objects; hence a fast, robust intersection detection algorithm is beneficial. Additionally, we present efficient predicates for classification of...
